![]() The hour grew late, yet the bar was showing few signs of emptying. She could not quite decide if she had done something horribly, terribly wrong or wonderfully, amazingly right. She could not help but to wonder how sex with a man she otherwise never would have spoken to fit into that equation. The DTI agent told her she couldn't speak of her time travel to anyone. Now that the throes of passion ended and the heady rush was over, she had time to think and a cloak of unease settled over her like a stifling blanket. Instead, she went to bed with this James Tiberius Kirk, one who was very real and very alive. Would they have gone this far? It became easier every time she replayed the scenario in her head. Would she have been bold enough to suggest James didn't need to sleep on the couch that night? Maybe. Would they have eventually retired back to the hotel to rest? Eventually. Would there have been more stolen kisses along the way? Probably. Would they have continued to walk the streets of Toronto that night? Yes. What would have happened if that watch had not begun to glow? It still called to her, despite being buried in a box, in a drawer, on the other side of her quarters. ![]() Though she could not voice them either, her thoughts also lingered on an old watch. The safer option was saying nothing at all. but I can't stop thinking about him, even now. I think I'm desperately trying to recapture that with you. He made me feel things I've never felt before - he saw a better version of me, and showed me how to see her for myself. I met another version of you from an alternate timeline. Unable to answer that question honestly, she played through the entry to that conversation in her mind. It didn't matter if that man remained nothing more than a ghost in her memory. It didn't matter if that man never existed. No man wanted to hear that the woman he lay in bed with was thinking about another man. "What are you thinking about?" the voice of Jim Kirk asked from behind her.Įven La'an possessed the social graces to know she should not answer that question honestly. The specter of a drink haunted her all day. She stared at the message on the PADD apprehensively, then decided she could leave a response until after her shift. Was it because she never realized what was happening until it was too late? She felt the connection forming in the few minutes of time they shared, and it overwhelmed her to the point that she fled. Talking to him - the living, breathing, native to this timeline version of him - outside of sickbay unnerved her more. Rounding a corner to suddenly see James stalking through the corridors felt akin to finding a ghost. Their brief encounter aboard Enterprise while at the deuterium refinery in the Bannon nebula left her deeply unsettled. A small part of her existed that hoped he would somehow forget, or at least that their ships would never be in the same sector ever again. I'd like to collect on that drink I'm owed.Ī narrow thread of excitement wound through her sheer terror. Our berths are scheduled to overlap for 72 hours. I'm told that Enterprise is due to dock at Starbase 3 soon. Upon seeing the sender of the message awaiting her, she felt her heart speed up and her stomach drop. ![]() After completing the second braid with her usual efficiency, La'an crossed the room to pick the PADD up. La'an glanced in its direction, but was unable to respond as all ten fingers were engaged in the morning ritual of braiding her hair. and the sensation of a hand coming to a gentle rest upon her hip and a soft kiss brushing across her bare shoulder snapped La'an out of that reverie entirely.Ī small chirp emanated from the PADD resting at the foot of her bed. Yet, there was also the gentle sound of breathing, reminding her that the solitude was a lie. The subtle thrum of the warp core hummed rhythmically, calmingly through the deckplates - like a quantum mechanical heartbeat. The constant, faint hiss of the atmosphere circulators whispered through the air. The stars allowed her to imagine cloaking herself in solitude.īlissful quiet filled the Enterprise, with so many on shore leave. Were they on the port side, the view out her window would be Starbase 3 and the USS Farragut docked beside the Enterprise. She also found relief in the fact that her quarters were located on the starboard side of the deck. La'an found some solace in the void she gazed into, as she lay on her side in bed, staring out the window into the stars. The expanse of space can make one feel infinitesimally small, and when one feels that small, one can feel comfortably alone in the universe. One could stare into its depths, and lose oneself to the endlessness of it, just as easily as one could lose oneself to her thoughts. The vastness of space, full of impossibly distant twinkling lights, could be hypnotizing to stare into.
